Discovering Innovative Ways for Solving Clean Energy Transition
Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is organizing a Hackathon Challenge for Clean Energy Transition in association with T-Hub and powered by AWS. The Hackathon will give opportunity for Startups and SMEs to present their innovative solutions to NRL team and post that they can get a chance to become a part of iDEATION Program of NRL.
Discovering innovative ways for solving clean energy transition.
The clean energy transition, also known as the energy transition or the green energy transition, refers to the global shift from fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources to cleaner and more sustainable alternatives. This transition is driven by the need to address climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air and water quality, enhance energy security, and create a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
The transition involves a significant increase in the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass. These sources generate energy without emitting greenhouse gasses and are replenished naturally.
Improving energy efficiency across various sectors, including buildings, transportation, and industrial processes, is a crucial aspect of the transition. Energy efficiency measures help reduce overall energy consumption and minimize waste.
One of the primary goals of the transition is to reduce carbon emissions from energy production and consumption. This involves replacing fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, with low-carbon or carbon-free alternatives.
Transitioning from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is a significant component of the clean energy transition in the transportation sector. EVs produce fewer emissions and can be powered by clean electricity.
Modernizing and creating smart energy grids can improve the efficiency, reliability, and integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity distribution system.
Developing advanced energy storage technologies, such as batteries, pumped hydro storage, and thermal energy storage, helps balance supply and demand fluctuations in renewable energy generation.
Biofuels are renewable fuels derived from organic materials such as plants, algae, and animal waste. They are considered an alternative to traditional fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel because they can be produced from sustainable sources and have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels

Established on April 22, 1993, in accordance with the Assam Accord, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is a Category-I Miniratna CPSE under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, upgraded to Schedule A CPSE on July 4, 2023. Dedicated to the nation on July 9, 1999, by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the 3 MMTPA refinery showcased credible performance since its commercial production in October 2000. With a commitment to socio-economic development in Assam and North East India, NRL is recognized globally for exporting products like Paraffin Wax.
Undertaking a substantial expansion project to increase capacity from 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA, NRL is investing over Rs. 28,000 Crore, making it one of the highest investments in the North East. The project includes a Crude Oil Import Terminal at Pardeep Port in Odisha and a 1640 KM pipeline for transporting imported Crude Oil to Numaligarh. Additionally, NRL is implementing a 360 KTPA Polypropylene project at an estimated cost of Rs. 7,231 Crores.
In line with the Government of India's target for net zero by 2070, NRL aims to achieve net zero goals by 2040. Taking steps towards this, and in alignment with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, NRL is initiating the setup of a Green Hydrogen plant with a capacity of 300 kg/hr (18 MW) within the Refinery premises.
Incorporated in 2015, T-Hub has provided 2000+ national and international startups access to superior technology, talent, mentors, customers, corporates, investors, government agencies, and other innovation ecosystem stakeholders.
